DON'T MISS THE TRAVELING SHOES!

No, this has nothing to do with the traveling pants. This is about domestic abuse - and survival.
I blogged about this exhibit on November 21st and
finally got over to Carla Gizzi's beautiful store to check out the shoes.

They are awe inspiring! The stories behind these shoes took my breath away. You have two more days...don't miss THE SHOES....

READING A BOOK - IT IS LIKE A COMPANION

I JUST FINISHED READING A JODI PICOULT NOVEL. I WOULDN'T SAY I LIKED IT - IT SEEMED TO GO ON AND ON....FIRST ON THE FARM AND THEN IN THE COURTROOM. BUT I MISS IT NOW THAT I'M FINISHED. FOR ONE WEEK IT WAS WITH ME ALL THE TIME AND WHEN I HAD A FREE MOMENT I PICKED IT UP. INSTEAD OF SURFING THE TV CHANNELS I PICKED UP MY BOOK.

I WILL HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER BOOK SOON.....NOT HARD TO DO IN THE LIBRARY!

MAN ON WIRE

This movie is an amazing example of someone following their dream. Even more amazing are the number of people who were willing to help Philippe Petit achieve his life long dream. He must be very persuasive!

But what struck me more than Philippe's achievement was the footage of the World Trade Center Towers. Especially today - as the one remaining steel wall returns to Ground Zero to become part of a monument to the people who perished on 9/11/01.

In this movie, you see those steel frames going up for the first time, you see the buildings emerge as two completed works of architecture - and art.

And, sadly, this movie shows how a man with a dream can get past even vigilant security when his passion is all consuming.

WHAT TO KEEP, WHAT TO TOSS

How does a library manage its collection? It is a tough call, deciding which classics to keep and which classics are no longer "relevant". Read Bobbi Seidel's column from the Asbury Park Press 6/20/09 regarding just this topic....

ONLY ONE RED BANK

Website for all things going on in Red Bank! No, not Red Bank Green or Red Bank Orbit which are great fun but are mainly current happenings. JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB - A MUST SEE!

I've been struggling to find a good movie lately. They are all so sad or brutal or silly. I did enjoy Frozen River and recommend it highly. But it didn't sweep me off my feet and make me want to immediately sit through another viewing. The Jane Austen Book Club did just that for me.

The ensemble cast of JABC (forgive me but I am not just on a first name basis with the characters but even ready to give them nicknames!) is familiar from various TV programs and movies. Most of them feel like old friends. But few if any have actually acted together on the screen. By the end of this movie you feel like they are family and you hope that they just keep making movies together.

By the way, you don't have to be a Jane Austen fan to like this movie. But it does make you want to go back and reread a few of them if you are a fan!

ANOTHER BUSY DAY IN RED BANK!

Runners are milling about Red Bank after the annual George Sheehan Classic .... it was a beautiful morning for a run or a jog or a walk. Even a stroll down the center of Broad Street would be fun on a morning like this.

Post race hopefully all the spectators and runners are buying some coffee and other assorted means of sustenance. So far they aren't crowding the library but that is okay. We were busy all week during the frequent rain showers and happy to have the streets filled with sun deprived people. And happy too that people are respecting our library-only parking lot. Thanks everyone!

RED BANK CHOCOLATE SHOPPE

If you visited the library last week you may have sampled some of the best chocolate this side of Bruges.....and it came from down the block. A wide variety of different chocolates were donated to the library by the Red Bank Chocolate Shoppe. By all accounts, and smiles, the chocolate was very well received.

But, imagine, that some folks were not aware that there is a chocolate shop around the corner (or through the bank parking lot and diagonally across from the Clearview Cinemas) so run, don't walk, to get your own chocolates. And let them know you heard about them at the library. That should boost our reference statistics!

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

The Raffle was a great success!

Last week was National Library Week and to celebrate we held a raffle - the prizes were books! (who doesn't love books, I ask you?) Still we were really pleasantly surprised by the sweet responses from our winners.

The staff went to a lot of work to select a few "prize" books from our book sale room and then to try to match the books with the randomly selected winners. Well, by all accounts, each book was a perfect match!

Thank you to all involved!

RED BANK AS A LITERARY CAPITAL?

What a great thought!

I took this title from the local paper, TriCity News, March 12, 2009, Vol 10 Issue 26. In this issue they published an interesting article about authors coming to Red Bank. And these authors are being brought to Red Bank by Kim Widener and Jacquie Dalton-Fiorito as part of their company "Book It".

Check out their website and their upcoming "book it" events:

http://www.bookitevents.net

Their last event was a well attended party at the Two River Theatre - Robert Wagner (yes, that Hollywood celebrity and husband of the late Natalie Wood) has written a book called "Pieces of My Heart" and he was toast and host of the evening. The price of the ticket included a copy of the book, a party and chance to chat with Robert Wagner.

Right here in Red Bank.

THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE

This debut novel by David Wroblewski is not universally loved.

Those who read it all the way through disagreed about whether the book "ended" and whether the ending was the one they had hoped for. (some didn't get past the first few chapters)

But who could resist a Sawtelle Dog after reading Wroblewski's engaging descriptions of these amazing animals?

I think the book is beautifully written. But I was a little disappointed in the ending. The last half of the book you fly along on a journey with a boy and his dogs, just hoping it will be okay....
