RED BANK NEWS - oRBit DEBUTS

Our town and the surrounding areas are bursting with news - so much so that new (or is that news?) publications (print and online) are popping up all over the place...

Online/"In Print"

Red Bank oRBit a blog about stuff "around" town.

"X-IT ARTZENE" is a new magazine that features the art scene in Monmouth County - movies, music, books and art of all sorts.

"The Red Bank Monitor" is a new publication that covers Red Bank happenings for Red Bank folks.

Oldies but Goodies...

Everyone is familiar with Red Bank Red Hot - that fun freebie that appears on street corners and in the window of most Red Bank establishments. Did you know it is also online?

Red Bank Red Hot

And last but not least -

Red Bank Green

CONTINUING THE SILVER THEME..NOW WITH BOOKS

I am borrowing from the New Old Age blog again. Jane Gross challenges her readers to recommend books as well as movies that focus on the senior population. I am passing on this challenge....any recommendations from the Red Bank population?

This book list was obtained from the August 7 post of the New Old Age Blog.

Patrimony (by Philip Roth)
The Optimist’s Daughter (by Eudora Welty)
As We Are Now (by May Sarton)
Angle of Repose (by Wallace Stegner)

An anonymous contributor to our blog left a great top ten list of books (see comment under the second post for June 26, 2008 ). It so happens that this reader also lists the book "Angle of Repose". A coincidence? Perhaps - but I tend to think things happen for a reason. So I will look around for this book. In the meantime, if you've read it...please share any insights you might have. Thx

SILVER MOVIES...FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART

I found a very interesting list of movies last week. They aren't all one genre or all one director....the common ground with this list is the movies are all about the elderly or the process of aging. I have only personally watched a few on the list - but I think I will make a point of seeing a few more. I have one favorite of the few I've seen.....Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont is a treat and a joy to watch.

I obtained this list from another blog - a NY Times blog called the New Old Age by Jane Gross. The link is at the bottom of the blog....check it out.

Umberto D. (1952, Dir. Vittorio De Sica)
Wild Strawberries (1957, Ingmar Bergman)

AND THEN THERE WAS MUSIC......

Really liked a CD you borrowed from the library? Find similar music on this web site.

If the Red Bank PL doesn't own the CD, maybe we can borrow it from another library!

SOMETHING EVERY DAY IN THE CHILDREN'S ROOM

The first week in August is all about Butterflies! Come and do crafts or listen to a story about butterflies.

Don't miss the bug hunt on Monday August 11th.....there are bugs everywhere!

Are you afraid of crickets? They can be pretty scary but the cricket crafts during the second week of August are fun.

The Summer Reading Program will be coming to an end on August 15th. Don't miss the big party on August 19th.
