TWO POPULAR AUTHORS WILL WRITE NO MORE

MICHAEL CRICHTON DIES, AGE 66

Educated as a medical doctor at Harvard Medical School, Crichton was the creator of the popular television series ER. However, many will also remember him for his books and movies such as The Andromeda Strain, Coma, Westworld, Jurassic Park and The Lost World, that utilize a common plot element found in many of his works, which is what happens when technology and man’s thirst for power and greed mix and go completely awry.

TONY HILLERMAN DIES, AGE 83

Tony Hillerman's fans knew him as a compelling mystery writer who gave readers around the world a glimpse into the land and culture of the Navajo.

DOORKNOBS AND COLDS - WASH YOUR HANDS!

Doorknobs, TV Remotes Spread Colds
10/29/2008
A new study finds that cold sufferers often leave their germs on the refrigerator door handle and the TV remote, where they can live for two days or longer.
Scientists at the University of Virginia tested surfaces in the homes of people with colds and reported the results Tuesday in Washington at a joint meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Doctors don't know how often people catch colds from touching germy surfaces as opposed to, say, shaking a sick person's hand, said Birgit Winther, an ear, nose and throat specialist who helped conduct the study. Two years ago, she and other doctors showed that germs survived in hotel rooms a day after guests left, waiting to be picked up by the next guest.
For the new study, researchers started with 30 adults showing early cold symptoms. Sixteen tested positive for rhinovirus, which causes about half of all colds. They were asked to name 10 places in their homes they had touched in the preceding 18 hours, and researchers used DNA tests to hunt for rhinovirus.
"We found that commonly touched areas like refrigerator doors and handles were positive about 40% of the time" for cold germs, Dr. Winther said.
All three of the salt and pepper shakers they tested were contaminated. Other spots found to harbor the germ: 6 out of 18 doorknobs; 8 of 14 refrigerator handles; 3 of 13 light switches; 6 of 10 remote controls; 8 of 10 bathroom faucets; 4 of 7 phones; and 3 of 4 dishwasher handles. The study was sponsored by Reckitt-Benckiser Inc., makers of Lysol, but no products were tested in the research.

HAVE YOU DISCOVERED KATE ATKINSON YET?

This British author has been around a lot longer than J.K. Rowling - she may not be as well known but her books are certainly worth taking a look at. Her early books are fun but she seems to have really hit her stride with her recent detective novels.

Background
"Behind the Scenes at the Museum" won the 1995 Whitbread Book of the Year award and caught the interest of readers in the British Commonwealth countries.

But it took "Case Histories" (2004) to catch the attention of the American audiences.

The New York Times just gave her latest novel, "When will there be good news?" , a rave review.

Kate Atkinson's official web site can be found at:

DO WE STILL HAVE TIME TO READ?

how have our reading habits changed in the past 30 years?

I ask this not because of the easy access to online information that has occurred during this time period but because of changes in the type of book we are attracted to and what we hope to experience when we sit down to read "a good book".

I heard on the radio today that a survey completed by USA Today a few years ago was repeated and people still feel like they have no time. They are so busy that they just can't get ahead.

So do we read books that are a "quick read"? Books that fulfill some need but don't create anxiety in the process?

I started thinking about this because I finally finished "Angle of Repose" by William Stegner.
(I asked back in June for your top ten list of books and one reader contributed their list which included this title - see post from that date below
http://redbankpl.blogspot.com/2008/06/would-these-be-your-top-10-for-past-25.html )

This is a beautifully written, tragic book. A love story (stories), a story of frustrations - physical and social, and a story of aging. It plays out ever so slowly, with the 1970's and 1870's sometimes competing on the same page. This is not a "quick read". You have to commit to this book - commit your time and your senses - in order to keep up with the characters and to get to know them.

To be honest, I didn't commit 100%. I think I am out of the habit. (I also don't have any time). Several times I considered picking up a "fun" book....something that I could finish quickly and feel productive.

Are books like the "Angle of Repose" still being written? Should the New Book shelf contain a category for the committed reader? I wonder...

FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS

Libraries are a great place to visit when you arrive in a new town. Get a sense of the library, get a sense of the people. And perhaps come in out of the rain, find a comfy chair, rest your weary soul and catch up with a favorite book.

The same is true of independent bookstores. An eclectic mix of books and culture, independently owned bookstores provide unique places to share your love of books. An interesting entry on the indie bound website highlights one writer's favorite bookstore.

BANNING BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

Imagine not being able to find some of your favorite books on the shelf. Or you hear about a controversial new book and you go straight to the library to check it out so you can find out for yourself. And it is not available.

It seems that the current Republican candidate for Vice President once considered banning books from her local library.

The NYTimes published an article about Sarah Palin on 9/3/08 which stated that...
"Shortly after becoming mayor, former city officials and Wasilla residents said, Ms. Palin approached the town librarian about the possibility of banning some books, though she never followed through and it was unclear which books or passages were in question."

"LIBARY" OKAY?

Most definitely not, according to the New York Times Columnist Randy Cohen (8/17/08 The Ethicist, NYTimes Sunday Magazine).

Some words ( "libary" and "nucular" for example), pronounced incorrectly, do not reflect a charming colloquialism and should be corrected, particularly in the young.

CONTINUING THE SILVER THEME..NOW WITH BOOKS

I am borrowing from the New Old Age blog again. Jane Gross challenges her readers to recommend books as well as movies that focus on the senior population. I am passing on this challenge....any recommendations from the Red Bank population?

This book list was obtained from the August 7 post of the New Old Age Blog.

Patrimony (by Philip Roth)
The Optimist’s Daughter (by Eudora Welty)
As We Are Now (by May Sarton)
Angle of Repose (by Wallace Stegner)

An anonymous contributor to our blog left a great top ten list of books (see comment under the second post for June 26, 2008 ). It so happens that this reader also lists the book "Angle of Repose". A coincidence? Perhaps - but I tend to think things happen for a reason. So I will look around for this book. In the meantime, if you've read it...please share any insights you might have. Thx

SILVER MOVIES...FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART

I found a very interesting list of movies last week. They aren't all one genre or all one director....the common ground with this list is the movies are all about the elderly or the process of aging. I have only personally watched a few on the list - but I think I will make a point of seeing a few more. I have one favorite of the few I've seen.....Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont is a treat and a joy to watch.

I obtained this list from another blog - a NY Times blog called the New Old Age by Jane Gross. The link is at the bottom of the blog....check it out.

Umberto D. (1952, Dir. Vittorio De Sica)
Wild Strawberries (1957, Ingmar Bergman)
On Golden Pond (1981, Mark Rydell)
The Trip to Bountiful (1985, Peter Masterson)

Buena Vista Social Club (1998, Wim Wenders)

THOMAS JEFFERSON - A LIBRARIAN

Jefferson - a multi faceted man - maintained and cataloged thousands of books at his home in Virginia. When the city of Washington was set alight in 1812 and the Capital burned, Jefferson sold his library to Congress to start a new library - the forerunner of today's Library of Congress.
Before shipping the books to Washington, Jefferson made a detailed list of the books and how they were cataloged. Today, that same collection of books is being recreated at the Library of Congress. See more information below:
